How to get your project hosted here

If anyone has a project they want include on this tools site, please contact Audra Johnson (john8376@uidaho.edu) and she will help you get it set up.

Releasing straight to website:

Releasing straight to this website is suitable for releasing the binaries of projects that aren't open source or simple projects like single scripts.

Releasing on SourceForge:

We also have set up an account on SourceForge which has hosting that includes mailing lists, bug tracking, forums, and CVS hosting, as well as the ability to take donations. This is ideal for larger projects or ones that might have multiple people working on code. All projects released on SourceForge must be open source (in the public domain or with a OSI approved license).

In order to start the application process, we'll need which license to use, a project summary (max 255 characters), a technical description, a proper name and a Unix-style name. The technical description needs to be a minimum of 200 characters and should include details like programming language(s), OS platforms, dependencies, its purpose, and its major features. The complete documentation about SourceForge's services can be found here.

Checklist of things to think about before releasing

  • A name for your project -- both a proper name and a suitable directory name
  • A short description of your project -- what is it for, what is it written in, what problems does it solve, what are its major features?
  • Who are all the authors of/people associated with this project?
  • Is your project stand alone, or does it come with other requirements?
  • Are there papers/grants that need to be cited? If there are papers written about the project, should a copy be put up on the project's website, or a link to a PubMed abstract?
  • User documentation -- How is the program installed? How is the program used?
  • Do you want to release scripts? Source code? Binaries? Do you want to use SourceForge, or release direct to website? What license are you releasing under?
